NAME: Scania DESCRIPTION: Scania in general, for those at home and those abroad. STATUS: Non-moderated. TYPE: Text only, no lines longer than 76 characters. CHARACTER SET: Latin 1 LANGUAGE: Scanian, Swedish, Danish, and English RATIONAL: There is already a Swedish news group hierarchy: swenet (presently discussing whether to change its name). However, discussions are centred around Sweden as a whole and there are no regional groups. (There are actually no regional news hierarchies in Sweden, only local.) The result is that information and discussions that are of an entirely regional character are perceived as being out of place in any swenet group. There is also the desire to discuss issues primarily with people with a similar background as one's own, ie. people with their origins in the same region, or those who live there. Mailing lists are also of the type that allows you to take part, if you have no other access to the Internet than an e-mail account. There is already a mailing list for Östergötland which is fairly active "GUSKELOV". Scania would be the second region in Sweden with its own mailing list. This is perhaps not so important, but it is a natural development. The number of Scanians and descendants of Scanians on the net is by now fairly large. This mailing list does not in any way prevent the creation of a Scanian news group, whether with its own hierarchy or within swenet(/se). Mailing lists and news groups for the same subject can co-exist and complement each other. PURPOSE: Scania is Latin and English for Skåneland, which is usually defined as the provinces of Skåne, Halland, Blekinge and Bornholm. These provinces has a common history going back many centuries, and thereby also a culture that to a certain extent is a common culture. It is these provinces that should be discussed on the list. Discussions can involve economics, business and commerce, politics, communications, history, culture, language, social interactions and other related issues. These subjects can also be discussed in the context of the relations that Scania or parts of the region have with other parts of the world, in particular neighbouring countries and neighbouring provinces. Also more general discussions related to political ideas, based on the Scanian situation, are acceptable, but should remain limited in scope. The list does not have any political or religious basis. Subjects to be avoided are e.g. events that happen to take place in Scania but which don't really have any direct connection to the province. For example, a French Week in Lund would not be suited to the list. There would be the same problem with an exhibition of Dutch painters at Rooseum. This applies in particular to information and advertising, but also to discussions. Commercial postings are permitted in the form of brief informative notices to the extent they are well suited to this charter, with a good connection to Scania and only are mailed once, or as a result of a request from a list member. Otherwise, normal usenet etiquette is in force, as described in news.announce.newusers. The list is not moderated, but the list owner, C Malte Lewan , reserves the right to eject list members who cannot behave according to the chart, who exhibit generally uncivilized behaviour, or whose confrontational debating style damages the list's function as a meeting place for rewarding discussions between Scanians. The List Charter may be changed with little prior warning by the list owner.
